She wasn't looking for a business. She was looking for a lip balm she could trust.

From the founder

She wasn't looking for a business. She was looking for a lip balm she could trust.

Grai carried the same simple lip balm in her bag for years without a second thought. It said natural on the front, and that was enough for her. She trusted that.

Then in 2022, news broke about a lawsuit alleging that some of those "natural" cosmetics contained PFAS, the synthetic compounds that don't break down in the body and get called forever chemicals for a reason. That was the first time she sat down and read the label on her own lip balm, and what she found made her put it down for good.

The first batch of lip balm sat in my kitchen for two weeks before I gave it to anyone else. I wanted to make sure it was right for my own kids' lips first.

So she went to her kitchen, and for about a year she worked with plant-based ingredients she already trusted, trying to build a cleaner version of that same lip balm. That's where she ran into beef tallow, an ingredient women were putting on their lips and skin generations before the beauty industry existed. She rubbed a small amount onto her lips the first night she rendered a batch, and it held up through the night in a way the tube in her bag never had.

The lip balm recipe has changed since that first batch. The tallow comes from one family farm in Pennsylvania now instead of whatever she could source locally, and there's a year of testing behind every formula since. What hasn't changed is the standard. If she wouldn't put it on her own kids' lips, it doesn't make it into the batch.

What started as one lip balm in her kitchen became Oceanic Organics, tested first on herself and her three kids in New Smyrna Beach before it ever reached anyone else's bag.
